The experience at the Universiade in Chengdu ends with a triumph for Lorenzo Cortesia, able to overcome Poland in the final and boast the title of champion with the Italian selection of Coach Fanizza.
The Azzurri’s journey began in the best possible way with the clear victory against Taipei (3-0), where the center back from Treviso contributed with a haul of 8 points, 2 of which from nine metres. In the second outing of the first phase, it was Germany who had the upper hand, but Cortesia went into double figures with 10 balls grounded (2 blocks and 1 ace). His best performance then came against Brazil, clocking in 13 times and blocking opponents by the net on five occasions. After the round, in the quarterfinals the team led by Fanizza beat Argentina, with the class of ’99 who scored 6 points, before scoring 10 in the semifinal against the hosts China. Finally, Cortesia was also the protagonist in the final match against Poland, putting 11 points on the scoresheet, of which 3 were blocked and 2 aces.
For Cortesia, therefore, this is the second gold medal in this blue summer 2023, after the success achieved at the Torneo Internazionale dei 2 Mari at the beginning of July.
